BRIEF: Man dies from injuries in weekend hit-and-run on Northwest Side

Feb. 23--A 34-year-old man died after he was hit Sunday morning in a hit-and-run accident in the city's Avondale neighborhood, officials said.

According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred about 5:20 a.m. at the intersection of Milwaukee and Belmont avenues, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. The vehicle left the scene. The man, identified as Christopher Sanchez, was pronounced dead at 6:06 a.m. Monday at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

According to Chicago Fire Media information, the man was thrown about 30 feet in the air. He was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, officials said.

Sanchez lived in the 3100 block of North Sawyer Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office.

Sanchez's family planned to hold a vigil to ask the public for help finding the driver of the vehicle that killed him, a cousin said Monday afternoon.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit was investing, but was not releasing any further information through police News Affairs, a police spokeswoman said Monday afternoon.
