BRIEF: Man in 70s critically hurt in 'suspicious' fire on Southwest Side

May 28--Police are investigating a "suspicious fire" that critically injured a man in his 70s in his home in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side on Thursday morning.

The blaze started about 4:30 a.m. in the 3300 block of West Columbus Avenue, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition, Velez said.

No other injuries were reported, and the blaze was struck out quickly, Velez said.

Police detectives were called to the scene after officials reported that the cause of the fire was suspicious, police said.
