BRIEF: Man charged with fatal shooting of boy, 15, in Lawndale

June 24--A man has been charged with the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy as the teen stood on the street with friends last week in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

Marlon Welton, 20, of the 3300 block of West Douglas Boulevard, was charged with first-degree murder, police said.

Authorities said Welton was identified as the gunman who shot into a crowd in the 1400 block of South Millard Avenue about 5:35 p.m. June 16, wounding Martese Gentry in the chest and abdomen.

Gentry, of the 800 block of South Kedzie Avenue, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m.

Welton was scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday.
