BRIEF: Man charged with dogfighting following arrest at South Side home, police say

Nov. 17--A 57-year-old Chicago man was charged with dogfighting following his arrest Friday at his home on the South Side, police said Monday.

Cook County sheriff's police took Larue Jackson, 57, into custody at his home in the 6300 block of South Throop Street in the Englewood community after receiving information about dogfighting at that location, sheriff's spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said.

Investigators found 13 dogs chained or in cages in the basement of the home. Of those 12 had no food or water nearby, police said. A 14th dog was found dead in the backyard, police said.

Ansari said several dogs had scarring "consistent with dogfighting." Officers also found items indicative of dogfighting such as bite sticks, canine medications and fighting ledgers, she said.

"There was also blood spatter on the basement floor," she said.

Jackson also was charged with violation of owner's duties, police said.

Bail was set at $100,000 for Jackson on Saturday. He remained in Cook County Jail Monday afternoon and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, police said.
