BRIEF: Man charged with arson for CTA recycling bin fire

Jan. 18--A 19-year-old West Side man set fire to a recycling bin at a Red Line station on the North Side earlier this month before boarding the train, prosecutors said.

Ivan Corona-Gutierrez, of the 2200 block of South Kildare Avenue, was ordered held in lieu of a $100,000 signature bond and was ordered to be placed on electronic monitoring.

Corona-Gutierrez was charged with felony arson, according to a statement from Chicago police, after he lit a matchbook on fire and then put it in a recycling bin at the North/Clybourn Red Line platform about 12:15 a.m. Jan. 6, according to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mary Hain. The fire delayed the train for 17 minutes that day.

Corona-Gutierrez works full-time to support his family, a wife and two children, his attorney, David Reyes, said in court Saturday. Reyes' father and wife were in court but declined comment.

The Chicago Fire Department put out the fire, and no injuries were reported, police said.
