BRIEF: Man charged with animal cruelty in dog's death

March 25--A 52-year-old man who repeatedly dropped a dog on its head and ended up killing the animal earlier this month was ordered held in lieu of bail Thursday, officials said.

Melvin Stovall, of the 2000 block of West Adams Street, was ordered held on $150,000 bail by Criminal Court Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesel at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. He was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, according to police and court records.

Stovall was charged after he repeatedly picked up the animal by the legs and repeatedly dropped it on the head, causing its death, according Chicago police.

Stovall allegedly killed the dog about 10 p.m. March 10. The Chicago Police Department's animal crimes team investigated the incident and arrested Stovall on Tuesday.
