BRIEF: Man charged in Washington Park shooting

Jan. 25--A 25-year-old man was denied bail Saturday in Cook County court after being charged with shooting a man in the head and pistol-whipping another man in Washington Park on Wednesday, according to a Cook County Assistant State's Attorney.

Davonta Owens, of the 5200 block of South Indiana Avenue, was charged with several counts of aggravated battery and one count of attempted murder, all felonies.

Owens was with two other masked offenders who are still at large when the shooting happened around 8:35 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Calumet Avenue, according to police and Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Reginald Newton.

The 32-year-old shot in the head was critically injured and was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. As of Saturday, the man remained in "serious to critical" condition with a bullet lodged in his head, Newton said in court.

Owen also hit a second victim, a 31-year-old man, with his gun, Newton said.

Owen was arrested a couple of blocks away from the crime scene and a witness identified Owen in a line up, Newton said, though a firearm connected to the crime has not been located.
