BRIEF: Man charged with shooting grandmother in her home

May 29--Charges have been filed in the shooting of a 61-year-old grandmother, who was wounded in the neck as she watched TV in the living room of her home in McKinley Park, police said.

Manuel Martinez, 33, was charged with aggravated battery, discharge of a firearm and aggravated fleeing from police, according to a police statement. He was also cited for driving without a license or insurance.

Police say Martinez fired several times at a home in the 3600 block of South Honore Street around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, striking the woman as she sat on a couch.

The woman was hit in the right side of her neck and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where her condition stabilized, according to the statement.

Martinez sped away and headed south on Interstate 55, with police in pursuit. Martinez crashed his car on the ramp to Interstate 294 and was arrested.

Martinez, of the 2000 block of West 35th Street, was expected to appear in Cook County bond court Friday.
