Dec. 23--A Cook County judge denied bail Wednesday for a Rogers Park man charged with robbing and sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint after following her from a Red Line train over the weekend.
Milton Anderson, 26, of the 1700 block of West Juneway Terrace, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and armed robbery after he was escorted to the Area North police station by 49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore.
Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. cut off Anderson's court-appointed attorney, who argued for a lower bail since Anderson turned himself in.
"In this case that means nothing," the judge said. "The method of this attack endangers everyone."
Anderson had walked into the alderman's offices Monday morning saying he wanted to turn himself in, according to an email Moore sent to constituents.
Moore said in the email that a community activist recognized Anderson from surveillance photographs released by police and urged him to go to Moore's office. Moore said he took Anderson to Area North police headquarters and the victim "positively identified him as her attacker."
The attack happened about 4:40 a.m. Saturday after the Red Line train stopped at the Jarvis Avenue station, police said in an alert over the weekend that included several surveillance photos of a suspect.
The 25-year-old woman left the train and was walking on the 1400 block of West Jarvis when Anderson grabbed her from behind, police said.
He displayed a handgun and forced the woman to a secluded area, where he robbed and sexually assaulted her, police said in the statement.
Police found the woman's belongings in Anderson's backpack after obtaining a search warrant, prosecutors said.
