Man charged in fatal Lake Shore Drive crash

Oct. 25--A Lakeview man has been charged with reckless homicide after police said he hit two pedestrians with his motorcycle, killing one.

On Monday night, Charles Lyons, 20, was speeding on a motorcycle in the 600 block of South Lake Shore Drive and didn't stop at a red light, police said. Katrin Kutscheidt, 25, of Germany, and a 40-year-old man were hit in the crosswalk; the male victim was seriously injured and she was killed.

Lyons, of the 800 block of West George Street, was charged with reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving, both felonies. In a hearing Saturday afternoon, he was ordered held in lieu of $300,000 bail.

Prosecutors said Lyons, who did not have a valid license, was driving his 2002 Suzuki GSS600F motorcycle north on Lake Shore Drive, going 76 mph as he approached the intersection where the accident occurred, prosecutors said.

Lyons, who wore a neck brace and a back brace in court, was thrown from his motorcycle and also sustained "massive injuries," according to his attorney.

The woman died from blunt force trauma and the man is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital with major internal injuries and brain bleeding.

Lyons was home-schooled and has an engineering degree from Moraine Valley, according to his attorney.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil said she couldn't release Lyons on his own recognizance because "his reckless actions caused an individual to pass away" and caused serious injuries to another person.

A woman, who appeared to be his mother, cried in the courtroom following Lyons' court appearance.

Tribune reporter Megan Creapeau contributed.
