BRIEF: Man charged in August slaying held on $1M bail

Nov. 02--A 25-year-old man was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail Sunday after being charged with fatally shooting another man in August.

Robert Nathaniel, of the 1110 W. 50th Street, appeared before Judge James Brown in the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Prosecutors said Nathaniel shot John Short, 23, in the back around 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 in an alley off the 1100 block of West 51st Street, about a block from Nathaniel's home. He is charged with first-degree murder.

On a nearby liquor store's surveillance footage, prosecutors said, a man believed to be Nathaniel can be seen arguing, leaving in a red car, coming back in that same red car and ultimately being handed a gun prior to the shooting.

Throughout the last two months, "multiple" witnesses identified Nathaniel as the man who shot Short, prosecutors said, leading to his late-October arrest. He has no prior felonies.

When the judge set bail, three relatives cried and walked out of the courtroom, including Nathaniel's mother and sister.
