BRIEF: Man charged after boy, 5, finds gun and injures himself on South Side

Dec. 14--A 23-year-old man was charged after a 5-year-old boy found a gun in a home Saturday and accidentally shot himself in the hand, police said Sunday.

Myles Mitchell, of the 2000 block of South Michigan Avenue, is expected to appear in bond court on Monday, police said.

Mitchell faces misdemeanor charges of child endangerment and unlawful use of a weapon, police said in a press release.

The boy was shot at 4:25 p.m. Saturday in the 5900 block of South Calumet Avenue in the city's Washington Park neighborhood, police said.

The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.

According to authorities, Mitchell is not the boy's father and was arrested shortly after the incident. Mitchell allegedly admitted to police that he had the firearm in the home and said he had it in an area where the gun could be retrieved by the child, police said.

According to police, this put the child in a "dangerous environment," which led to the child being injured.
