BRIEF: Man beaten in the Loop, suspect in custody

April 05--A 50-year-old man was severely beaten in the Loop on Monday night, police said.

Officers responding to a call of a battery in progress in the 200 block of South State Street at 9:20 p.m. found the man with bruises and trauma to his face and head, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

He and a witness at the scene identified a 55-year-old man as the person who beat the victim, Estrada said. That man was in custody, and charges were pending, police said.
