March 09--A man who had barricaded himself in a South L.A. home for several hours Sunday has been taken into custody, police said.
The unidentified man surrendered to police about 4:20 p.m. without incident, police said. He had been barricaded in the home in the 5800 block of 8th Avenue in the Hyde Park area since about 9 a.m.
It was not immediately known if the man was armed, although he told a police negotiator during a phone conversation earlier that "he wanted to have a shootout with police," said Capt. Gary Newton of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Earlier Sunday, the man had released a 6-year-old boy who had been kept inside the house to police. It's not known whether the boy was related to the man, Newton said.
Responding to a call from a relative of the man, a SWAT team and several Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the Hyde Park home early Sunday, Officer Norma Eisenman said.
The man, who had reportedly been breaking some of the residence's windows before the police arrived, then ran inside and refused to come out, Eisenman said.
The SWAT team had the residence surrounded, and police negotiators attempted to negotiate with him. No information was available about why the man might have barricaded himself.
