BRIEF: Man accused of killing girlfriend who had order of protection

Feb. 23--A Bridgeport man who had been ordered to stay away from his girlfriend is accused of fatally stabbing her during an argument over the weekend, according to police.

Maurisio Hernandez, 34, stabbed Maricela Villegas, 35, in the neck around 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the 2800 block of South Short Street, police said.

Villegas was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:28 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Hernandez was charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in bond court Monday, but an officer said he was admitted to a hospital for complaints of abdominal pain and alcohol withdrawal. Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois ordered Hernandez held without bail until he can appear in court.

According to court records, Villegas got an order of protection against Hernandez on June 2, 2015 after he was arrested and charged with domestic battery and aggravated assault. Last fall, it was extended to July 17, 2017.

In January, Hernandez was again arrested and charged with domestic battery and violating the protection order. The case was dropped earlier this month, according to records.
