Nov. 02--A 90-year-old man died and an 87-year-old woman was in critical condition after a fire ripped through a home on the South Side Saturday evening, officials said.
The fire was reported at about 6:30 p.m. on the 5600 block of South Mayfield Avenue, according to police.
The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, officials said. The woman was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.
The fire occurred in a single family home in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
The fire department will be handing out information and fire detectors in the community at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight said.
