BRIEF: Man, 69, accused of bringing loaded gun into federal building

July 24--A 69-year-old man accused of bringing a loaded gun into the Kluczynski Federal Building on Wednesday said he had forgotten it was in his bag.

Thomas M. Bogle, who is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, was released on his own recognizance by Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. during a Thursday afternoon hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said that when Bogle entered the Kluczynski Federal Building, 230 S. Dearborn St., at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, a security agent using an X-ray machine spotted the handgun "loaded with six live rounds" in a bag Bogle was carrying.

"I went to the range to shoot on Sunday, and I forgot to remove the gun from my bag,'' Bogle told a federal agent while waiting for Chicago police to arrive, according to a police report.

His defense attorney said he was on his way to visit the IRS when the incident happened.

Bogle has a valid firearm owner's identification card but not a concealed carry permit.

Bogle, of the 100 block of Harbor Drive, is slated to appear in court again July 29.
