BRIEF: Man, 24, accused of pimping a woman at a Southwest Side hotel

Feb. 20--A man was charged with promoting prostitution after Cook County sheriff's investigators said he was caught pimping a woman out of a hotel room on the city's Southwest Side.

Troy Gardener, 24, was arrested Wednesday during an undercover sting after investigators responded to a Backpage.com advertisement. Investigators determined that Gardener had rented a hotel room and was pimping a woman he had met on Backpage.com, a website sometimes used for prostitution and sex trafficking, according to a release from the Cook County sheriff's office.

Gardener was charged with promoting prostitution and was scheduled to appear Friday afternoon at a bail hearing, the release said.

The Cook County sheriff's vice unit has made more than 750 arrests off of Backpage.com since 2009, officials said.

The woman was offered services through the Woman's Justice Program, which helps recovering prostitutes.
