Autopsy: Gunshots, crash injuries caused deaths of man, 21, and boy, 16

Feb. 01--Autopsies determined that a 21-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy died of gunshot wounds and injuries they suffered after crashing in the Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side early Sunday, officials said Monday.

Alan Garcia, 21 of National City, Calif., died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Roberto Sanchez, 16, of the 2900 block of North Elston Avenue, died of blunt force injuries to his torso from the car crashing into a fixed object. His death was also attributed to multiple gunshot wounds, according to the medical examiner's office.

Both deaths were ruled homicides.

Officials said the two died after the crash outside DePaul College Prep High School, formerly known as Gordon Tech High School.

The car crashed into a planter in the 3700 block of North California Avenue around 5:15 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

Both victims were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

Chicago police initially said Sanchez and Garcia had suffered gunshot wounds but later revised that information after a doctor told authorities they did not believe the two had been shot.

The autopsy confirmed the initial information that the two had been shot.
