BRIEF: Man, 20, dies 6 years after being shot while walking with mother

Oct. 03--A 20-year-old man who was shot six years ago while walking with his mother in the Logan Square neighborhood died Thursday of his wounds, authorities determined Friday.

Jeremy Gonzalez, 20, was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m. Thursday while in hospice care at a facility in the 7400 block of North Sheridan Road, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Gonzalez died of complications from a gunshot wound to the head, the medical examiner's office determined after an autopsy Friday.

Gonzalez was 14 years old when he was shot in the back of the head as he walked with his mother about 9:10 a.m. Dec. 8, 2009, in the 3400 block of West Armitage Avenue, authorities said at the time.

Gonzalez was walking when a man or boy in his late teens or early 20s approached, and after shouting and flashing gang signs, shot the boy, police said at the time. The attacker then fled on foot, she said.

He was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition after initially heading to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Court and police records indicate no one has ever been prosecuted in Gonzalez's shooting.
