BRIEF: Loyola University student drove robber who blinded victim with pellet gun: prosecutors

Oct. 11--A Loyola University student served as the driver during a robbery and attempted robbery this week, including one in which a man was blinded in the left eye after being shot with a pellet gun, prosecutors said Saturday.

Makiah Burns, 18, participated in the robbery attempts on Monday, prosecutors said. The first attack took place on the 2900 block of North Ridgeway Avenue in Logan Square, when the robber Burns allegedly was driving around used a pellet gun to try to rob a woman of her cell phone. That attempted robbery was unsuccessful, as the woman fought back, prosecutors said.

The second attack occurred the same day on the 2000 block of West Concord Place in Bucktown, when the robber stole a victim's wallet, cell phone and laptop. The robber then shot the victim in the eye with the pellet gun, causing the victim to lose sight in that eye, prosecutors said.

Burns and her vehicle, a black Honda, were seen in surveillance footage from one of the robberies, according to court records.

Burns is from Hazel Crest. Her public defender said Burns is a Loyola student.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil set bond at $250,000.
