BRIEF: Los Angeles woman charged in death of her 82-year-old grandmother

May 23--A Los Angeles woman was charged Monday in the death of her 82-year-old grandmother earlier this month.

Rebecca Surratt was charged with one count of murder, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. Surratt is scheduled for arraignment Monday.

Surratt lived with her mother and grandmother, Martha Yslas, at a home in the 300 block of Woods Avenue.

Yslas was in the home on May 6, when Surratt allegedly began to hit her, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Det. Theo Baljet.

"As far as we can tell, she got upset at her grandma and beat her up," Baljet said. "She punched her and kicked her and possibly choked her."

Yslas was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. the next day, according to coroner's records.

Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $2.02 million. If convicted, Surratt faces up to 26 years to life in state prison.
