Jan. 05--The fate of Los Angeles' campaign to bid for the 2024 Summer Games could be decided Thursday during a special U.S. Olympic Committee board meeting at Denver International Airport.
The committee plans to submit only one American candidate and must choose between Los Angeles and three other cities -- Boston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
After hearing presentations from each of the finalists in early December, the board is expected to make its decision Thursday and announce a winner shortly thereafter.
San Francisco has been considered an attractive choice because the Games have never been there before and because of the city's global appeal. But Los Angeles would be the more reliable option, with a surplus of world-class venues and a track record of having successfully hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984.
Mayor Eric Garcetti and sports businessman Casey Wasserman have spearheaded the city's effort.
The USOC must submit an official bid by early 2016. The International Olympic Committee will select a host in the summer of 2017.
