Aug. 13--A longtime member of McDonald's board of directors retired Monday due to "health reasons," McDonald's said Thursday.
Roger Stone, 80, had been on McDonald's board since 1989. Stone is also the chairman and chief executive of Northbrook-based Kapstone Paper and Packaging, a maker of unbleached kraft paper and corrugated products with annual sales of more than $2.3 billion.
Kapstone said in a filing with federal regulators that Stone is taking a leave of absence from the company and it appointed Chief Operating Officer Matthew Kaplan, 58, as interim chairman and CEO.
McDonald's said it is not filling Stone's seat, which will reduce its board to 14 directors.
Stone is a descendant of Joseph H. Stone, a Russian immigrant who with his sons formed J.H. Stone and Sons in 1926, a paper wholesaler that later became Stone Container. Roger Stone led the company from the late 1970s and through its merger with Jefferson Smurfit in the late '90s.
