Jan. 14--A woman officials described as elderly died after a fire swept through a home in the South Wrigley section of Long Beach on Wednesday night, officials said.
The woman, who was not identified, was found dead in the living room of a single-story home in the 2300 block of Daisy Avenue around 9:30 p.m., according to a statement issued by the Long Beach Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:19 p.m., where they found smoke and flames in the front of the residence. The blaze was brought under control within minutes, but the woman and one of her dogs were found dead once firefighters gained access to the home.
Jake Heflin, a fire department spokesman, said the woman, who was in her 80s, lived alone and there was no one else in the house at the time of the fire. The blaze was limited to the living room of the home, Heflin said.

Heflin said the victim was known to use an oxygen tank. She was also a smoker, and a space heater was found in the living room, he said. While a cause has yet to be officially determined, all of those factors could have contributed to the fire.
