BRIEF: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard ejected for stomping on opponent's leg

March 22--Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard's time in the English Premier League is drawing to a close, and it was shortened by three games after his 38-second appearance against Manchester United on Sunday.

Entering the match as a halftime substitute, Gerrard was shown the red card 38 seconds later when he appeared to stomp on the leg of Manchester United's Ander Herrera.

Replays showed Gerrard made contact with Herrera's leg after the midfielder challenged him for the ball.

Manchester United went on to win, 2-1.

"I need to accept it; the decision was right. I've let down my teammates and the fans. I take full responsibility," Gerrard told Sky Sports after the match. "I don't know what caused it. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle [by Herrera].

Gerrard, who is expected to join the L.A. Galaxy in July after signing a contract with the team in January, is set to miss the next three games because of the ejection. It was the sixth red card of his EPL career.
