BRIEF: "Lion King" breaks Chicago's box office record with $2.3 million week

Jan. 04--The North American tour of "The Lion King" broke the record for the highest-grossing week in Chicago theatrical history.

For the week ending Sunday, nine performances of the touring production brought in a total of $2,356,724 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, breaking the previous record of $2,012,723 set by "Newsies" at the Oriental Theatre for the week ending Jan. 4, 2015.

This is the second consecutive record broken by "The Lion King" over the holidays. The production broke the eight-performance-week house record at the Cadillac Palace Theatre for the week ending Dec. 27, 2015, bringing in a total of $1,810,167.50.

"The Lion King," Julie Taymor's staging of Disney's Serengeti classic, plays through Jan. 17 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph St.
