Dec. 18--Lindsey Vonn has done just about everything in her historic skiing career -- on Friday, she was hoping to notch five consecutive World Cup wins.
Almost made it. But not quite.
The American racer finished 0.01 of a second behind Lara Gut of Switzerland in the super-combined at Val d'Isere, France.
"Maybe one hundredth faster would've been nice, but you know, you win and lose by hundredths all the time," Vonn said. "So it's just part of the sport."
The second-place finish doesn't exactly mar what has been a strong start to the season for a woman who holds the career record for World Cup victories. This month, Vonn has won a giant slalom, super G and two downhills.
In Friday's combined, she predictably led after the downhill but could not hold off Gut, who made up the difference in the slalom.
"I crossed the line with the sensation I had done my job," Gut said. "And it finally was enough."
Vonn added: "Considering how much slalom I've trained, which is pretty much nothing, I think it was a really good performance."
