BRIEF: Lincoln Park Zoo's Bactrian camel baby is doing well

May 19--The first Bactrian camel born at Lincoln Park Zoo since 1998 is doing well, the zoo announced Thursday.

The animal, of a sex yet to be determined, was born May 9 and now measures out at 81 lbs. and 4 feet in height. The two-humped species can grow to 1500 lbs. and 7 feet.

"He is still a bit wobbly on his feet but remains quite strong and is ready to begin meeting the rest of the herd," said Curator Diane Mulkerin in a zoo statement.

The calf is the first successful offspring of the female Nasan, 7, and the male Scooter, 6. All the animals are in the zoo's Antelope Zebra Area, along with two more adult females.

Mother and calf are expected to be on display intermittently as the young one develops.
