BRIEF: Lew and Susan Manilow buy $4 million condo

Nov. 11--Attorney, real estate developer and art collector Lew Manilow and his wife, Susan, paid $4 million on Oct. 22 for a three-bedroom, 3,349-square-foot condo on the 12th floor of a Near North Side tower.

The unit had been listed for $4.1 million on Oct. 16. Features include 31/2 baths and marble floors.

The Manilows currently have a contract pending to sell their three-bedroom, two-story maisonette-style condominium unit in the luxury Gold Coast building at 65 E. Goethe, which most recently was listed for $5.75 million. That's more than double the $2.45 million they paid for it in 2004.

In the early 1990s, the Manilows hired architect Max Gordon to design a 10,000-square-foot contemporary-style mansion on North Howe Street in Lincoln Park that was aimed at accommodating their art collection. The couple listed that mansion in 2002 for a then-record city asking price of $10.5 million and sold the home in late 2004 to then-Pritzker Organization President Mark Hoplamazian -- who now is Hyatt Hotels' CEO -- and his wife.

Crain's Chicago Business first reported on the Manilows' purchase.
