BRIEF: LAPD to give 1,000 pairs of 'Shoes from Santa' to South L.A. children

Dec. 06--Santa Claus will be arriving by police helicopter at the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street station Tuesday, joining officers to present gifts of more than 1,000 pairs of new shoes to underprivileged children in South Los Angeles.

In the annual event, called Operation Shoes from Santa, police plan to distribute donated shoes, toys and treat-stuffed stockings to preselected local children whose families cannot afford basic necessities.

The event at 6 p.m. on Tuesday will also feature hot cocoa, real snow for children to play in and a Santa's Workshop area for them to build and paint crafts, according to the LAPD. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and police Chief Charlie Beck are expected to attend.

Anyone interested in contributing new shoes may drop them off at the 77th Street station at 7600 S. Broadway or call (213) 485-4285.
