BRIEF: LAPD officers shoot man with gun in South L.A., officials say

Aug. 07--Los Angeles police shot a suspected gunman in South L.A. on Thursday afternoon, police officials said.

The incident stemmed from a report of gunfire, according to Cmdr. Andrew Smith. When the officers were in the 900 block of East 91st Street near Central Avenue, they saw a man with a gun, Smith said.

Plainclothes officers chased the man down a nearby alley. After a brief foot pursuit, the man was shot "multiple times," Officer Drake Madison said.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the officers to fire at the man. The shooting occured just after 2:30 p.m.

A gun was recovered at the scene, Madison said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital but his condition was not known. No officers were injured in the incident and police are looking for any potential victims from the initial reports of gunfire.
