Lake Shore Drive reopened after deadly wrong-way crash

Dec. 22--One person was killed and three were hospitalized after a crash caused by a car heading the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive early Monday.

A 26-year-old man driving south in the northbound lanes in a 2001 Nissan Sentra about 2:40 a.m. collided with two cars in the 4100 block of South Lake Shore Drive, police said.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was killed in the crash, police said.

Two women, both 23, were in a 2011 Ford Fusion that was sideswiped in the accident, police said, and both refused transport to a hospital.

A Chevy Impala also was hit by the Nissan, police said. The 23-year-old male driver of that car and a 21-year-old female passenger who was in the front seat were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition. A back-seat passenger, a 22-year-old woman, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said. Another back-seat passenger, a 25-year-old man, refused transport.

Police believe the accident may have been alcohol related, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

Police were investigating early Monday, and northbound lanes were closed between 47th Street and 39th Street until just before 7 a.m., police said.
