BRIEF: 23 labor protesters arrested outside Wal-Mart in Pico Rivera

Nov. 14--Authorities Thursday evening arrested 23 people protesting outside a Wal-Mart in Pico Rivera as part of nationwide efforts to organize the retailer's employees, authorities said.

The demonstration began in the store's parking lot at Washington and Paramount boulevards, said Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Lt. Alex Villaneuva.

Protesters were arrested when they moved into the intersection and disrupted traffic, he said.

The 11 men and 12 women were released after they were cited for unlawful assembly and failure to disperse, which are misdemeanors punishable by fines, jail time or both.

The protest was organized by OUR Wal-Mart, a union-supported group of employees pushing for wages of $15 an hour and more full-time positions.

In a statement, Wal-Mart contended that its employees have "unparalleled advancement opportunities" as well as access to bonuses, a 401(k) plan and other benefits.
