BRIEF: L.A. Councilman Joe Buscaino weighing congressional run

Feb. 05--Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino, who represents the southernmost stretches of the city, is considering running for a congressional seat that could be vacated by Rep. Janice Hahn (D-San Pedro).

Hahn is weighing a run for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which could leave her seat in the House of Representatives up for grabs in 2016.

Buscaino, who represents the 15th District on the City Council, has followed in her footsteps before: The former police officer was elected in 2012 to fill the vacancy created when Hahn won her House seat. He was reelected to a four-year term in 2013.

"He's giving it serious consideration," Branimir Kvartuc, communications director for Buscaino, said Wednesday when asked about whether Buscaino might run for the seat.

The City Council district that Buscaino represents includes the Port of Los Angeles and the San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway and Watts areas. He currently leads a council committee that focuses on public works and gang reduction.
