April 12--DENVER -- Javier Baez seized the moment on Aug. 7 when he hit two home runs in his third major league game at Coors Field.
But it's Kyle Hendricks that gets a chance Sunday to sustain the success he achieved against the Colorado Rockies on the same day.
Hendricks, who will make his first start of the 2015 season, pitched a career-high eight innings of five-hit ball in a 6-2 win.
Hendricks is taking nothing for granted, as he watched videotapes of the Rockies' batters for nearly two hours on Saturday.
"Guys like him you appreciate," manager Joe Maddon said. "Some guys would be overwhelmed by information. He's able to process it."
Hendricks' poise more than compensates for the lack of a blazing fastball, and the win over the Rockies was significant because he wasn't fazed by the hitter-friendly conditions at Coors Field.
"I really believe he can pitch well in a phone booth," Maddon said. "He's a precision type of pitcher with good stuff. I think everyone looks at him as being a command guy, but his stuff is good, too. When he's executing his pitches well, it doesn't matter where he's pitching."
