Cubs Game Day: Kris Bryant hits two HRs

March 15--Cubs 3, Athletics 1

Cubs 10, Brewers 5 (eighth inning)

Spring record: 3-8-1

The summary: Hometown hero Kris Bryant was scratched from the starting lineup at third base against the A's because of right shoulder fatigue. Bryant, however, surfaced in the third inning as a designated hitter and hit a two-run home run to right field, and then hit a solo shot to left center in the sixth.

At the plate: At Maryvale, catcher Welington Castillo hit a two-run double to highlight a seven-run third inning. Tommy La Stella hit a double in the second and had four hits in two games against the A's.

On the mound: Kyle Hendricks, Joseph Ortiz and Jorge De Leon combined to retire the first 21 Oakland batters before Matt Olson led off the eighth with a double off Armando Rivero that struck the left field wall. Edwin Jackson, battling for a spot in the rotation, pitched three scoreless innings against the Brewers.

In the field: Javier Baez took over at shortstop after Bryant was scratched and made an accurate throw to retire Mark Canha to end the first.

Key number: 4 -- Home runs by Kris Bryant in his past three games.

vs: Reds, 1:05 p.m., Sunday at Sloan Park: LH Travis Wood vs. RH Johnny Cueto.
