April 10--Top prospect Kris Bryant embarked Thursday night on his mission to join to the Chicago Cubs as soon possible.
Bryant, 23, who was assigned to Triple-A Iowa despite batting .425 with nine home runs in 40 at-bats this spring, went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in a 7-4 loss at Memphis in a Pacific Coast League opener.
Bryant hit a single to right field against left-hander Marco Gonzales, one of the top pitchers in the St. Louis organization, to score John Andreoli during a four-run third inning.
The 6-foot-5 Bryant stole second base and scored on a single by Junior Lake.
Bryant flied to right in his first at-bat in the first inning and grounded to second in the fifth against Gonzales. In the eighth, Bryant struck out against former Cubs minor league pitcher Marcus Hatley.
Bryant caught a pop at third base for his only defensive play.
