BRIEF: Woman hospitalized after kitchen fire on North Side

April 20--One person was injured in a kitchen fire Monday morning at a senior housing building in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood.

The blaze started about 10 a.m. in the Breakers at Edgewater Beach building in the 5300 block of North Sheridan Road, according to police and the Chicago Fire Department.

When a medical alert call came in, firefighters went to the scene to check on the person, opened the door and were met with thick smoke. Crews pulled the victim out the residence,' according to fire officials.

The female was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital. Her condition was not disclosed.

The fire was extinguished with hand pumps, but smoke lingered and occupants were advised to stay inside their apartments, officials said.

A Breakers staffer who identified herself as Dorothy said firefighters were still cleaning up as of 10:45 a.m.
