April 07--International officials have given Kenya until May 2 to bolster its anti-doping enforcement or face exclusion from the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics.
The World Anti-Doping Agency announced the deadline on Thursday morning, confirming the African nation had missed a Feb. 11 deadline to show significant changes.
"The current situation is not in compliance" with global anti-doping standards, WADA said in a statement.
Known for long-distance runners, Kenya has seen dozens of its athletes test positive for banned substances in recent years. It could join another powerhouse -- Russia -- whose track and field program is currently banned from international competition.
Kenyan officials had previously expressed confidence they can satisfy the WADA code by forming a new national anti-doping agency.
A WADA board is scheduled to review the matter and vote on any potential actions at a meeting in Montreal next month.
