Feb. 16--The 58th annual Grammy Awards got rolling Monday, with Kendrick Lamar leading the way with 11 nominations. Before the Grammy network TV telecast, The Recording Academy handed out the bulk of its 83 awards, including four to Lamar (including Best Rap performance for "Alright.") . Nominees with Chicago connections who took home trophies included Buddy Guy for best blues album ("Born to Play Guitar"), Mavis Staples for best American Roots performance ("See That My Grave is Kept Clean") and eighth blackbird for best chamber music/small ensemble performance ("Filament").
"Glory," performed by Common and John Legend and co-written by Chicago rapper Che "Rhymefest" Smith, won for best song written for visual media.
The awards cover recordings released between Oct. 1, 2014 and Sept. 30, 2015.
