April 23--PITTSBURGH -- Anthony Rizzo leads the Chicago Cubs with a .475 on-base percentage.
But part of that is due to the fact that Rizzo has been drilled six times in the first 13 games.
Nevertheless, manager Joe Maddon doesn't believe Rizzo, who is standing closer to the plate this season, is a target of opposing pitchers.
"I don't worry," Maddon said. "You always have a pretty good sense of when it's intentional or not. For me, in our game, we want to pitch inside, we're going to hit guys on occasion.
"You have to try to evaluate intent before you want to reciprocate."
Maddon said he's suggested that Rizzo wear a protective elbow pad, but Rizzo has declined.
"He's not going to give any quarter," said Maddon, joking that Rizzo might want to sport a "Barry Bonds autographed elbow pad."
"Sometimes it's the style of the hitter more than the pitcher."
