BRIEF: Jockey Gary Stevens gets his 5,000th win in North America

Feb. 14--When Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens won his 5,000th race in North America on Friday by getting Catch a Flight across the finish line first at Santa Anita, the milestone was slightly different from some of his peers.

Stevens, 51, had easily won more than 5,000 races worldwide. He passed that landmark in 2005, before he retired with injuries for seven years.

But this one added to a recent comeback that included a Preakness victory aboard Oxbow and a Breeders' Cup Classic win aboard Mucho Macho Man in 2013.

The race was a $58,000 allowance test, and the horse was trained by another racing Hall of Famer, Richard Mandella.
