BRIEF: Jennifer Hudson once again providing underprivileged students with school supplies

Aug. 12--Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson and her sister Julia Hudson will pass out school supplies to underprivileged children and their families during the fifth annual Hatch Day Friday at Kroc Center Chicago in the West Pullman neighborhood -- just like they always do on August 14.

That date has a significance, as it was the birthday of Jennifer Hudson's nephew and Julia Hudson's son, Julian King, who was murdered in 2008 along with their mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson. Because King would have entered the 8th grade this year, Hatch Day will include a graduation themed celebration.

Over 8,000 children attended the Julian D. King Gift Foundation event last year and collected everything from calculators to notebooks, according to the foundation.

"I love hearing these stories about how they felt as though they've been held," Hudson told the Tribune last year. "And then to see them growing and to know they know we're watching them. ... We're investing in them, more than just giving them supplies, but letting them know we care. And we're here."
