BRIEF: 'Jem' movie turns Synergy into a chirping robot

Aug. 12--New revelations in the "Jem and the Holograms" movie trailer prove that the "Jem" movie is really nothing like the "Jem" cartoon. How so? Well, in one case the filmmakers turned Synergy (the complex artificial intelligence computer system that turns cartoon character Jerrica into rock star Jem) into a robot. Behold.

This new trailer of the much-aged-down band of Jem characters and the rest of the band (the Holograms) unveils a new little robot named Synergy built by Jerrica's father. It's a singing bot that plays videos and rolls around like a little robot alien. It's cute, and no doubt it was designed to be that way.

However, this is not from the "Jem" canon. The original Synergy (also built by Jerrica's father) was an ultra-elaborate computer. Not saying this clearly sentient, absolutely adorable little bot isn't smart... but it doesn't look like it can transform a human being into a totally different human being via holographic projection.

Ah well. Fingers crossed for the Misfits.

"Jem and the Holograms" opens Oct. 23.
