BRIEF: Jake Arrieta sees big spike in Twitter followers

Oct. 09--Jake Arrieta gained more than 20,000 Twitter followers in a day, according to a Twitter official citing data from Nielsen SocialGuide on Thursday.

@JArrieta34 had 102,300 followers as of Tuesday. Arrieta struck out 11 batters in the Cubs' 4-0 wild-card win over the Pirates Wednesday night then woke up Thursday morning to more than 124,000 followers on his account.

Cubs-Pirates was a hot topic on Twitter Wednesday. More than 899,000 tweets were sent about the game and those tweets made more than 101 million impressions on overall online users in the U.S., Nielsen figures show. The Yankees-Astros wild-card game on Tuesday had about 577,000 tweets and 68 million impressions.

@Cubs grew by 11,000 followers since Tuesday to reach 655,000. Rookie slugger Kyle Schwarber's @kschwarb12 grew by nearly 6,000 followers to 65,000 in the same time span.

The Cubs have been using the hashtag #FlyTheW, which, when used in tweets creates an emoji of the "W" flag the team flies at Wrigley Field after victories. The hashtag has been used in more than 106,000 tweets in the last day.
