BRIEF: Inspector: Porch that collapsed in Evanston not properly secured

May 26--A porch that collapsed at an Evanston apartment building, sending four people to the hospital, "was not attached properly" to the building, a city inspector said Tuesday morning.

The second-floor porch in the 1900 block of Darrow Avenue in the north suburb collapsed about 8:45 p.m. Monday while about a dozen people were on it, Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said.

Four people were taken to Evanston NorthShore and Presence St. Francis hospitals with what were believed to be minor injuries, Bobkiewicz said. The other people who were on the porch at the time of the collapse were treated at the scene, he said.

City inspector Gary Gerdes told reporters that the porch was not properly secured.

"Pretty much most deck failures occur where the deck meets the house," Gerdes said. "That's what happened here. There's a lack of attachment at the house. The desk was not attached properly to the structure."
