BRIEF: Inmate fight at Men's Central Jail prompts lockdown

Dec. 05--About 120 inmates were involved in a fight at Men's Central Jail near downtown, prompting a lockdown of the facility, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The fight erupted about 2 p.m. Friday, and within minutes, jail personnel were joined by deputies from the jail's Emergency Response Team, officials said.

When verbal commands were ignored, deputies used liquid Oleoresin Capsicum and pepper-spray balls to quell the disturbance, officials said. Additional security was then called in.

Ten inmates were treated for minor injuries and another was taken to a hospital after he reported having difficulty breathing. His injuries were not life-threatening, officials said. No deputies were injured.

No weapons were found or are believed to have been used by inmates, officials said. An investigation into the cause of the disturbance is ongoing.
