Feb. 10--American women's marathon record holder Deena Kastor of Mammoth Lakes, who won a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic marathon and was considered a prime contender for a top-three finish in Saturday's Olympic marathon trials in Los Angeles, withdrew from the competition Wednesday because of an unspecified injury.
Kastor, who will be 43 on Sunday, had the fourth-fastest qualifying time for the marathon trials, which will be held on Saturday in downtown L.A. However, she said on her Twitter feed that she won't be able to compete. That was later verified by USA Track and Field.
"Sidelined so late in the game. I'm out of the Trials but I'll see you in LA #LA2016 2 see who makes the Olympic team," she tweeted Wednesday.
Kastor has also worked with the trials host committee on organizing various aspects of the event.
The top three women finishers and top three men finishers will be nominated to the U.S. Olympic team for the Games in Rio de Janeiro.
