BRIEF: Illinois lags nation in personal income growth in first quarter

June 22--Illinois lagged the nation in personal income growth in the first quarter, and the state's farming and mining industries saw bigger-than-average drops in earnings.

Nationally, state personal income grew 0.9 percent on average in the first quarter, after growing 1.1 percent in the fourth quarter, according to estimates released Monday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Illinois, in contrast, grew in those periods by 0.7 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively.

That put the state 37th overall nationwide in personal income growth.

The fastest growth was in Florida, at 1.3 percent.

Four states saw drops overall in state personal income.

The state with the biggest drop was Iowa, at 1.2 percent.

The other states with drops were Nebraska, South Dakota and Idaho.

Nationally, earnings in farming and mining, including oil and gas extraction, were down 22.4 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively.

In Illinois, those industries saw drops of 28.6 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively.
